Spaceborne II - Space Marine Boarding Party

The genesis of an idea for a shadowbox. The body is an unused resin casting of the Spaceborne figure that I had sculpted in 1995. I intend to sculpt a new head (a blob of unbaked clay stands in temporarily), new arms and a new weapon. The Marine will be emerging from a heavily damaged airlock, it's outer door blown open with C4 and a hand grenade tossed in.

A not to scale sketch of the interior, transferred to a piece of poster board.

Designing the outer shell/face of the shadowbox.

Practice painting a background.

Test illumination using a mini flashlight.

A chamber to hold the mini flashlight. The unit emblem will serve as a cap for the opening.

"And there was war in heaven" Revelation 12:7-17. A revised background design.

Test

The background design as an acrylic paint on foamboard painting.

The painting photographed and downloaded into a computer photo editing program. Then refining the image.

A test shot. A photo of the original painted Spaceborne figure converted to black and white with the background cropped out, superimposed on a photo of the shadow box mock-up, which was superimposed on the refined computer image of the background.

A CGI mock-up.

I liked working on the CGI mock-up so much that I decided not to build an actual shadowbox. Here is the computer generated image in it's finished state.
